The makeover is a staple of nearly every great high school movie. We meet an unpopular character, usually a girl, who is apparently committing crimes of fashion so serious that she’s been alienated by her high school peers. Until, thank goodness, someone is generous enough to bestow upon her the miracle of a life-changing makeover. The power of her new look is so strong that her classmates are forced to accept her, and everyone lives happily ever after.

Ok, so movie makeovers may not be as aspirational as they seemed when they fascinated us at slumber parties. People shouldn’t be alienated based on how they look or find their confidence in changing something superficial.

But we can take away something from these classics — that makeovers are a fun way to try on a different look and they don’t change who you are at your core. Before their makeovers, these characters all had unique personalities they were genuinely happy with, but they may have been holding a little piece of themselves back. With the perspective of their transformation, they’re able to come out of their shell and be a little more comfortable in the people they’ve always been.
